and finally time to breathe.. We had a great day yesterday @thfest - thanks to the festival, TH centre and St Catherine’s Church for having us and for everyone who dropped by for a visit and a chat. Room with a View offered a metaphor for migration by transforming the caravan into a bird shelter, with nesting eagles, hummingbirds, swan bills, ospreys and other bird life from around the world visible through each window via a series of live wildlife webcams. Different parts of the installation gave a creative voice to refugees from AFRIL’s Helping Hands foodbank in Lewisham. Displayed alongside the birds were framed 19th C world maps with each member’s route to the UK embroidered over in gold. Outside the caravan were upcycled postcards from exile with messages from participants to the world. Shelters of the world.. the simple bird shelter, in thousands of gardens across Britain. If you want to protect and nurture bird life, you’re supposed to create shelters and have a garden rich with different plants and vegetation. It’s a known fact we definitely need different species to have a healthy bio diverse ecosystem so we can all thrive. These are images I found from National Geographic magazine, 1950. Tropical birds, painted with beautiful colours and celebrated for their majesty Birds migrate, people migrate - we could try treating people in the same way? Room with a View @thfest is about shelter ... nowhere was the need for this more visible or poignant than in the Calais Jungle. Tents and structures of all descriptions housing men, women and children from all over the world to form a huge, diverse community. So much difficulty and hardship there, but also incredible resilience, courage and creativity. I’m bringing the caravan to Telegraph Hill this Saturday as a little haven away from the temperamental weather/ current confusion in Britain that offers an alternative perspective on migration to try and counter the negativity prevalent in our media. Room with a View was developed through creative workshops with refugees from AFRIL’s Helping Hands foodbank. I’ll be offering a hot brew and activities for all ages throughout the day. today’s a grey day, so here’s a little glimpse into a brighter world ... the beautiful Zealandia, Karori Wildlife Sanctuary in Wellington. Shelters of the world... the Bothy. Bothies are small huts or cottages, built for farm labourers or for mountain refuge in the Scottish wilderness. They are open and free to all. There are no rules but a simple Bothy code .. Respect other users Respect the bothy Respect the surroundings If the bothy is already occupied when you arrive you are encouraged to go on in, and if you’re there first you are asked to make other visitors welcome. ‘Bothies and bothying have been described as many things. Holiday homes they are not.. Shelters of the world.. the Caravanserai. The word ‘caravan’ comes from the name given to groups of travellers who walked together along the Silk Road in ancient Persia, laden with goods to sell. The Caravanserai were roadside inns.. shelters for rest, recuperation, water and refreshment for weary travellers and their animals. preparations are underway (with help from my mini assistant) for ‘Room with a view’ -a project created for @thfest in collaboration with Action for Refugees (AFRIL) in Lewisham. We’ll be at the top of the hill on Sat 13 April from 11-6. Come and visit!
